Base Camp is the metaphor for our daily life and home, but also the place we explore various artistic endeavors and regenerative systems.

We are driven by our interest in growing the food that we eat, becoming responsible stewards of the land, and my work as an artist. We’ve built Base Camp Farm to be the container that allows our creativity to flourish and teaches us how to restore and regenerate - both ourselves and our land.

What is regenerative Agriculture?

Regenerative practices have been gaining much more attention as we see the effects of the climate change process unfolding rapidly. Building on the cornerstone ideas of sustainability, regenerative practices look at what it will take to actually reverse the effects of climate change through the regeneration of the land that grows our food and produces our water. Specifically, regenerative gardening practices look at ways to harness the photosynthesis process of plants to draw down carbon out of the atmosphere and help to restore the quality of our water cycle, thus restoring the biodiversity of our entire living system. What does it look like for us?

Thinking about the state of the planet and our society can be truly overwhelming, but our beacon for hope has become the incredible network of people figuring out the solutions. In starting a garden, we knew there was something out there that would help us work with the land, not tame her. The more we learned about regenerating practices, the more we knew we had to start incorporating them, even in small steps, one at a time as we could, and connecting into this community. For us, this looks like letting the land guide us to what she needs. And as we are out there moving our bodies, sweating while tending to weeds or taking down invasive plants from our woods and planting new trees, dirty from kneeling in the ground – this feeds our hopefulness - in mind, body and soul. As we work to heal the land and increase our symbiotic relationship with her, we heal ourselves and our community - we deliver food and honey to our neighbors on our bikes, ring doorbells, have conversations, sharing what the land has given us in abundance and give as much as we can back to her.

We have lived on this land since May of 2018, though our roots in this region run back to our childhoods for both of us. A fortunate move home from Colorado to be closer to our families with our two young children found us on this beautiful property in Waite Hill, Ohio. It was the trees - they pulled us in and continue to keep us rooted to the ground.

The stewards of this land:

We are operating on the land of the indigenous territories of the Erie, Haundenosaunee, Kaskaskia and Mississauga people.

It is our intention to be respectful stewards of the land, employing care, health and well-being towards her as those who came before us.
